Frequently asked questions
Do I need a bookkeeper? Straight answers for Australian owners
Everything owners ask before handing over the books, from what it costs to what a BAS agent can lodge. Not covered here? Get in Touch.
Most of these questions come up on a first discovery call. For the detail on what we handle each month, from payroll through to BAS lodgement, see our services.
Do sole traders need a bookkeeper?
Many do, especially once GST registration kicks in. Our Bookkeeping service suits sole traders well: monthly reconciliation, transaction coding and GST readiness checks, with no payroll costs you do not need. Clean books also make tax time cheaper with your accountant.
What bookkeeping software do you use?
Xero. Our team are Xero specialists and every client runs on it. If you are on other software, we can move you across as part of getting started.
When is my BAS due?
Quarterly BAS is generally due on the 28th of the month after the quarter ends. Lodge through a registered agent and you usually get extra time on top of that. We track every deadline for our clients, so nothing goes in late.
What is STP reporting?
STP stands for Single Touch Payroll. It is the ATO system where wage and super data is reported every time you run a pay. We handle STP as part of our Payroll and STP service, so each pay run reaches the ATO without you touching it.
What is a registered BAS agent?
A registered BAS agent is licensed by the Tax Practitioners Board to prepare and lodge BAS and IAS on your behalf. Registration requires qualifications, experience and professional standards, and it usually gets you extra time on lodgement deadlines. Sterix is a registered BAS agent firm, so your activity statements are prepared and lodged under that registration.
Do I need a bookkeeper for my small business?
If bookkeeping is eating your evenings, probably yes. Accurate books mean you know what you owe and where your cash sits, and your lodgements go in on time. Our team keeps the records straight so you can run the business instead.
What does a bookkeeper actually do?
We record and reconcile every transaction that moves through your business. That covers bank reconciliation, transaction coding, GST checks, payroll and the reports that tell you how you are going. It is the monthly discipline that keeps your numbers true.
What is the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant?
A bookkeeper keeps your daily records accurate: reconciliation, transaction coding, payroll and BAS. An accountant works on top of those records and looks after income tax and business structure. You need both, and clean books make your accountant faster and cheaper.
How much do your services cost?
We do not publish prices because every business needs something different. Each engagement starts with a free discovery call where we look at what you have and what you need. From there you get a clear quote before any work begins. Book the call, it costs nothing.
Where are you located?
We are based in Melbourne and work with small businesses across Australia. Because we run on Xero and connected apps, the service runs the same way wherever you are.
How often should I reconcile my accounts?
Monthly at a minimum, and that is the rhythm we run for every client. Regular reconciliation catches errors early and keeps BAS time quiet. Leave it until quarter end and small problems have three months to grow.
How do I switch to Sterix from my current bookkeeper?
One conversation is all it takes. Tell us you want to move and our team handles the file handover and access requests for you. There is no awkward phone call to make and no gap in your books.
